On Sunday 6th April 2025, 7 volunteers started our wildflower sowing at Mayford Meadows. We worked on 2 pilot plots, to test our approach – see here for details. We sourced native wildflower seeds (dual purpose, general purpose, wetland and woodland seed mixes), with thanks to Affinity Water for funding the seed purchase, as part of their INNS (invasive non-native species) Out scheme.
One of the plots was in shaded woodland as shown above, the second along the Hoe Stream (see below).
The wildflower seed mixes have been specifically chosen to provide habitat and food for our pollinators, but we hope they will also eventually put on a fantastic display when flowering, so local communities will also enjoy the diversity of colours. We will monitor the plots regularly, removing an regrown INNS, to give the wildflowers the best possible chance of surviving to flowering.
